Call me curvy. Call me plus size. Just don’t call me late for a sale at Torrid!
The fashion industry considers anything size 12 and over ‘plus size’ Want to get even more annoyed – an average ‘plus size’ model ranges from a size 6/8 to a 12. Yep, that’s right, according to the fashion industry only three sizes are considered NOT plus size (straight size, as fashion insiders call it). Based on that, I can safely tell you I’ve been plus size my entire adult life. And, I’ll most likely stay that way.
I remember a time when there were very few choices for people size 12 and up. I remember a time when the industry thought anyone with curves belonged in a baggy sack dress or some ill-fitting elastic waist pants. I remember being a young woman with great fashion sense who dreaded going to the mall with my friends because I knew I couldn’t shop at the same stores they shopped at. I remember avoiding that at all costs and going with my mom to try to find something – anything – that didn’t make me look like a middle-aged woman. That time wasn’t long ago, and we’ve come a long way since then.
I also remember the first time I learned of Torrid. I looked at their clothes and quickly cataloged the brand as ‘hot topics for plus size girls.’ That wasn’t my style, so I ignored their options for many years. BIG mistake on my part!
A Brand New Torrid
Well, there’s a reason I thought of Torrid in this way – it was, indeed a Hot Topic store when it first opened.
However, in 2012, Torrid made a very smart switch – focusing on body positivity and, according to their press release, delivering “looks ranging from casual chic to sexy dresses, and is characterized by lace details, pattern play and color impact.”
Now this is a Torrid I could get into. And, I did.
Torrid Has Got Your Plus Size Basics Covered
Today, I am a regular shopper at Torrid, and I’m telling you they have some fantastic clothes. And, when it comes to the fashion staples each of us need in our closet, this brand has you covered!
Let’s start with my favorite leggings of all time – the black full length premium leggings. At 5’10”, I often find leggings are cropped on me. Not these – they hit me at my ankle with room to spare.
They fit true to size from top to bottom. I absolutely love the thicker fabric and the tapered fit. The wider waistband is amazing – it sits at a super flattering place and helps smooth the midriff.
Next up is the always solid Mid-Rise Skinny Jean (shown here in the dark wash). These jeans have a sleek silhouette and come in lengths from extra-short to extra tall. They are super comfy and transition easily from day to night. If the mid-risk skinny isn’t for you, check out Torrid’s wide offering of jeans. I love their jeans search page because you not only see pictures of the jeans, but you can see a model wearing them in video – really helpful to get a feel for the fit.
I wear a lot of sheer tops, sweaters, and jackets. No matter what time of the year, Torrid has great camis to keep me covered and comfortable. The Foxy Black Cami flatters the figure and comes in several colors. I feel like I could use a separate closet for all of my camis! I love them so much!
Torrid Remains True to Lace, Patterns and Girly Things
Ethereal doesn’t even begin to sum up this Embroidered Off Shoulder Maxi Dress, but it’s an awfully romantic place to start. The airy coral cotton fabric is dream-like, and the hand-embroidered floral details dotting both the button front bodice and sweeping maxi skirt make this a dress perfect for day with the girls or a romantic night at the beach. And, best of all, an interior elastic band keeps the off the shoulder cut from slipping! That’s a real win.
For those seeking a bit more coverage, Torrid does a great job of providing dresses, skirts and tops that work for, well, work! In fact, two of my go-to outfits for board meetings are from Torrid. This Black Star Chiffon Ruffle Midi Dress boasts an elegant high collar and ruffle sleeves. I little bit of whimsy with a lot of coverage.
Lace has always been a part of Torrid’s lineup. Now, it is super feminine and even a little dressed up. This Burgundy Lace V-Neck Skater Dress is just perfect for a night out or wedding guest dress. I love the sweetheart neckline (so flattering), and I adore the peek-a-boo quality of the lace overlay being just a bit longer than the lining.
Get Beach Ready With Torrid
This eye-popping aqua and blue bikini top is slightly 80’s inspired with colorblocking boosted by black piping. The padded underwire cups lend a hint of support to your bust, with convertible straps that lend versatility. An adjustable keyhole back lets you decide how form-fitting you want it to be. And, paired with the high waist bikini bottom, you have the perfect amount of coverage (hello tummy-smoothing) while still staying totally flirty.
If you are a one-piece girl, Torrid’s got you more than covered. This pretty little number is like shapewear for the beach. Torrid’s ka-blooming bright yellow one piece swimsuit has padded wireless cups that will make your bust look amazing, and the ruffled trim will keep you oh so comfy. With a peplum overlay that conceals any tummy issues, the brief underlay is lined with power mesh to contour your figure. Adjustable straps can be worn straight or crossed.
Fit Tip: Ladies, this style is a form fit, like shapewear. You might have to squeeze it over your hips, but trust me, once it’s on, it fits like a dream (seriously, don’t size up, you’ll look amazing).
So, there you have it! A quick tour if Torrid’s offerings. I’m telling you, this brand has come a long way from its origins. Torrid should be one of your curvy-girl go-to stores.
